HAPPY NEW YEAR ! : SONNET 200

The year's arrived her days and nights in trail. May they enter your life, one after one, Three sixty five times each, fulfilling, blissful,  Through glorious risings, settings of the sun And waxings, wanings of the moon; in seasons All enchanting, but not scorching, chilling; With no floods, no droughts, no quakes or cyclones: May Nature be all caring, kind and offering! May all you do produce the crops of progress,  Of beauty, love, peace and prosperity, And conflicts, crimes, accidents, and diseases Stay 'way from your path to immortality.  May you attain new heights of pride 'n' fame,   May this new year be written in your name !!     -- N P SAMAL, Poet, Author, Academic   (IGIPS, MIET Group of Institutions, BBSR)

THE TRANSIT : SONNET 197

The new is coming and the old is going And in the transit caught my woeful soul Fazed by the game the old did play and thinking Whether the new will take forth the old's toll Or heal my wounds fore'er with painful bites, Fill my bowl forever begging, and empty, And make my days delightful, with my nights, But comes he with a pledge, with failure goes he. And so, the transit plays a soothing buffer-- The plane of calm between uneasy slopes Of retreating foe and fear'd do-gooder, As pains of my despairs are balm'd by hopes.  So I do wish the transit lies no end; Better is life than being assured, declined.  -- N P SAMAL

HOMOLUTION : SONNET 196

Humans have been evolving, and for aeons, As 'gainst each other species who've remain'd  The same--same fur, same face, same food, same sense And been to sex, play, nest and rest confined. But humans have not been the same tree-dwellers, Who have transform'd them into present wise men From monkeys, hominins, habilis, erectus...; And after Earth now occupying the heaven. And homolution is not here to cease; As humans ain't yet cleansed of things that's mortal-- Violence, wrath..., things animals possess; But to go on till they have turn'd immortal, When each will further turn a Human God, Although at present it appears absurd. -- N P SAMAL
