THE MERMAID

Upon the rock naked and brown In sun-gossamer'd morning gown Wallow'd a damsel with a guile Of cunning eyes and playful smile. 'A mermaid!', when some human said, Alertly raised she her craned head; Ensued a struggle among the men To reach the brink of the blue main. The charming glory of the wintry morn That took the spell by a rutting turn; How strong the Allure's malignant drag That men rode up the deathly crag! The sea-nymph held her breath off flight Her fleshly lips quiver'd a bit, She shook her legs and fins all open And dived into the sea none to own. The strugglers' woes loom'd on their face, Yet reckless of the aborted race; Jumped into the grave sea's nymphic home And came not out but the ominous foam!                                         -- N P Samal

DIVINE DIFFERENCE

I'm different from you, from him,  from the other; We three are different from  every other; And different are we all from  each other... The mix'd design of Nature that  we all differ By blood, by choice, by grade, by kind,  and contour. The differences then benignly ' oeuvre' Into the unifying force of  Nature... Like floral oneness beautifying t he garden, Like the chromatic union in t he heaven, The stars as they unite for lo ving nocturne, And symphony of notes in  charming fusion That we assimilate into  each other By the rhythmic force of the ' Cosmic Dancer', That we combine our unique verves  and measures For thrusts of Nature forward the  Divine Course... Diversities make the tenets  of Creation, In differences lies dynamics  of Union; With Odds are form'd the Supreme  amalgam - A link is each in the Eternal  Spectrum. Spread the kaleidoscope of sacred  Nature The paints of the A...

FEAR

Sometimes, in my resign'd moments, come direly crashing Pangs of the past into my mind that's so alarming: The Immortal tamely fell to  killer's bullet; My own palls were fear'd dead in a  freak accident. Dread i how my professor died in slumber When his son hit on head with iron hammer... From the refuse of happiness watch  i in dismay How Death by occult designs befall with sudden foray! What to save, and what to boast of and compete for, As draconian survival makes each morrow harsher? Yet Joy is racing endless down the  fatal circuit As dangers of ambushes prowl our hopeless racket...                              --- N P Samal

A PHILOSOPHER'S DREAM

Threat of Religion straggles fast a nd furious. Its blood-lust eyes see science and c ult's adventures - Their soaring wings aiming the sun, t he yond; So runs wild lest the raid wrecks G od's  abode. But science has shot up yon  interception. Religion so spills blood in d esperation. It forces its presence at  bloody cost. As between science and God swings h uman trust. Religion rallies 'round legions b ehind. Science's oeuvre multiplies with  humankind. Will they cohabit, or in each other m erge ? Or be at war with co-destructive  urge ? Where puts religion better than  own labour ? Where takes us science our soul and  home sever'd ? Religion-bound inhabit we r estricted, When straddle we science lifted we're h eart parted... Religion is a bondage of human  soul. Science is a soulless swoop into  the obscure. Religion creeps into human  emotion. Science digs into our social  foundation. Religion thrives in ps...

O DRIVER! O DRIVER!

O driver! O driver! Slow up. Slow up. Look, on your sides, There roll the bodies maim'd, Dismembered, dead... Stop and look behind, An endless trail of blood does flow, all warm and thick, That sweeps away the life of humanity, Away, by the savage wheels of precocity... O driver! O driver! Slow up. Slow up. Look ahead, There mill about a shaken lot -- Depressed, directionless, unfed -- In quest of life and daily bread; They know not rules, They know not roads, And carry loads of worries, angst, and agitation, Being blinded by loss of facts  and gumption... O driver! O driver! Slow up. Slow up. Do think of  the crowd, And, over there, Their hungry children,   Their life and soul, In their little world, Certain of their getting home, They play with merriment, For their toffees and toys And their daily nourishment... O driver! O driver! There lies their destiny, And destination,  A little over the strip, But dread we deep your fi...

THE FIDEL WIFE

For her separate never went Fidelity and fate; On the vocation of the occult Was she forever bent. Her chanting was a missive god Would dare not to ignore; Pleas and prayers out she spew To make marriage secure. On her rituals she brought the earth The whole of the heaven; And made the home the hell clogg'd with Smokes, cinders, and refrain. Her 'godown' grew with pujawares And likes of feng shui things - All fetishes, mascots, charms, and Sundry abstract trappings. In all the straps she saved the thread Of hard-earn'd chastity; And held her man tamed under Abnormal vanity. Perform'd she puja round the clock With odd hours for the household; Food, sleep and all in tatters she Did live the life e'er untold. She'd smear her husband's body with Hing, haldi to ash paste To protect him from the influence  Of any evil wight. In no terms she would compromise Ever on her sindoor; And spared no one who tried to pull A thread ...

BEING CHILDLESS

Fade the sheen of  life Fray the threads of  strength Fall at the seams the survival bents - The stasis of the midlife  solitude, The desperation of stiff ineptitude, The wretch'dness of the fetid  supplicant : Inside the soul that seeks the divine grant... A destitute despite dollops- Comforts as nuisance bugs, Stings of anxieties, pangs of worries, Waves of despair trembling the  plinth of manhood that's  malign'd - A solitary plant seedless in the garden - An odd minion amid bustles lies forbidden... Tyrants perish, heroes retreat, Abrade kingdoms of the mighty : There's no descendants, There's no immortality... The cast of fear from the haters, The quakes of thumps from the sinners - The vile resound the air all 'round; My promises are only a birth-bound... Vices i fight not. Virtues i grow not. And Moksha comes not to  a neuter... Meaningless is birth, meaningless is death, Deny i rights; duties stymie...
