In a morning of the wintry sun,
Upon a rock big, bare and brown,
Sat a mermaid being love-struck,
As waves of sea broke over the rock.
Swayed her fishy tail in the swells
With sparks of the golden scales,
Above bathed the strange damsel
In the morning sun's tender spell.
In her hood of the hairy cascade,
Shone her face in charmy spread
Of cunning eyes and playful smile;
Sat the nymph with maddening guile.
Waited she a little long for her lover
Till a merman from sea did appear :
A water nymph, of the same breed -
Half fish-half human, as mermaid.
Both the merman and mermaid
For a long time mirthfully played,
Then dived into sea one after one,
To Mama's wait did never return.
