ANTS, BEES, FARMERS : RHYME 57

In endless trails, worker ants, Each with food grain, Hurry to store in the nest Before comes the rain; In trailing lines, honeybees, Each with nectar, Hurry to store in the hive Before comes winter; In tireless toil, the farmers, Each with sweat, seeds, Till their land to grow food Before rain retreats : Build your life and future  On your fated lines, With zeal, zest, 'Make the hay While the sun shines.' Let's be the ants and bees And farmers; Let's work with commitment As true workers. - N P SAMAL

WATER NYMPHS : RHYME 56

In a morning of the wintry sun, Upon a rock big, bare and brown, Sat a mermaid being love-struck, As waves of sea broke over the rock. Swayed her fishy tail in the swells With sparks of the golden scales, Above bathed the strange damsel In the morning sun's tender spell. In her hood of the hairy cascade, Shone her face in charmy spread Of cunning eyes and playful smile; Sat the nymph with maddening guile. Waited she a little long for her lover Till a merman from sea did appear : A water nymph, of the same breed - Half fish-half human, as mermaid.  Both the merman and mermaid  For a long time mirthfully played, Then dived into sea one after one, To Mama's wait did never return.  - N P SAMAL

BIRDS IN CAGE : RHYME 55

Birds In Cage A medley of sweet sounds When sang the street, Mama trotted out of home In much delight.  There gathered many people  In a big round And leaned over the centre Their necks bound. Mama ran over to the place At one breadth length, And forced into the onlookers With her full strength.  There sat a big dark man, On head a turban, With a cage in his front and Birds in the one. Melodies of their voices in Sundry notes and tones Caught each young and old In fascination.  Beautiful little birds -- all Colourful and rare, Wings, feathers, smart going,  But caught in the snare. Little Mama got a shock Bigger than her joy, As she heard the crying birds In pain and dismay.  She ran back home fast, straight  To her father, "Papa, papa, buy me birds!", She cried for. The father gave a smile at His daughter's craze, Then bought her whole birds With the cage. Then, Mama took the birds ...

SILENCE SOUNDS AT NIGHT : RHYME 54

In snorts, snores and deafness, As the earth falls asleep at night; In love, cheer, attacks, covers, Silence makes many sounds right : In loving voices, notes and tones, Silence sings merrily at night In warblers, nightingales, blackbirds, With warbles, croons and tweets. In thumping feet, laughs, roars, Silence does predate at night, As hyena attacks on its preys And they scream loud in fright.  In cunning hisses and whispers, Silence tip-toes to prey on at night, As jackal stalks farm and fowls And dogs bark in alarm at sight. On a cowardly, defensive retreat, Silence shouts for help at night In sterling's voice of phone rings Or sandpiper's wheet-wheet-wheet. In a cacophony of struggles, Silence screams, wails, at night, With the warning cries of birds When fox and badger fight. In many voices of mockingbird, Silence mimic all at night, From owl's hoot to hawk's hiss  To robin's whistle till first light.  In not so hypes or hubbubs, Silence does chorus at night, ...

MAMA'S GARDEN : RHYME 53

The garden of Mama always  Bristles with blooms; She loves her garden if her child, Grows it and grooms. No splendour of colors or Show of lights Can match her garden's  Floral delights.  Beauteously do bloom flowers  Blue, red, yellow; Cheerfully they drift on Gentle and slow. Together they play ever, In full rapture; Happily they feed bees and Butterflies on nectar. Hate not, spite not, greed not, No lies or anger; In truth, peace, love and bliss, They bloom forever.  Comes summer ruthless, But they do bloom, They do bloom through storms Of hardest doom. With blooms of her own smile, And heart and soul, Mama marvels at her garden  As blooms it beautiful.  She sees the garden of blooms  As immortal, And weeps a lot when drops A plant or petal. Mama in the garden, herself  Turns a flower; "May she forever bloom happy!", I do pray for her. - N P SAMAL

DOWN THE RIVER ROLLS : RHYME 51

Down, down, down it rolls Over cliffs and falls; Over rocks, landmasses, Down the river rolls. Down, down, down it rolls Over many hurdles; Spreading wide, meandering, Down the river rolls.  Down, down, down it rolls With babbles and burbles; Quenching the thirsty earth, Down the river rolls. Down, down, down it rolls  Through sands and soils; Feeding for flora and foliage, Down the river rolls. Down, down, down it rolls With no stops or strolls; Creating glories eternally, Down the river rolls. -- N P SAMAL
